Although getting the job done cheap is the goal, you must be cautious that the job gets done right the first time. Keep this in mind when planning your projects.

It is a brutal fact that cutting corners can actually lead to more financial loss that just biting the bullet from the get-go and making sure the job was done right. Too many times people take short cuts and end up paying more to have the job either redone or fixed instead of paying the piper from the start and getting the job done right.

One example is: A friend of mine wanted to install a back door on his house. Installing a back door where there is currently no door is not as easy as it sounds. You need to cut into the existing house, watch electric, plumbing, studs, etc, and ensure the job is done right. You don't want a crooked door, or a place for drafts and bugs to get in. He tried to do it himself and royally messed up his siding and had a crooked door that wouldn't shut right.

He ended up paying 3x more in repairs than it would have cost to hire a contractor to do it in the first place.

Although this site is about saving pennies, never forget the golden rule. "Only tackle jobs that you know you can do well".
