One way to conquer the litter box challenge is to train your cat to use the toilet. Although it may sound funny, cats can indeed learn to use the toilet and many cats even learn how to flush. Training a cat to use the toilet is not too hard and can be accomplished in a few weeks if you have the proper training plan. But remember, just because your cat uses the toilet does not mean cleaning is eliminated. Your daily chores may be easier, but you will still have to sanitize the bathroom often. Overall, spraying some daily Windex is an easier option than changing the litter box.
Here is one way to train your cat to use the toilet instead of a litter box. The process should take around two weeks to fully train your cat, but it may get messy during the training period.
Start by relocating the cats litter box into the bathroom you would like him to use. Place the litter box on the floor next to the toilet as usual. Show your cat where the litter box is located and your cat will usually start using the litter box immediately. Within a few days time, after your cat accepts its new location, you will need to move the litter box once again. This time you are going to fasten it to the top of the toilet. Doing this will make your cat jump on top of the toilet into the litter box to relieve himself. Just remember to fasten it well because if it falls, it will certainly make a mess.
In about 3 to 4 days after you relocate the litter box onto the toilet, start to gradually take cat litter out of the box, but leave enough in so your cat will not reject the litter box. Once you get your cat to use to his litter box with as little litter as possible, it's time to cut a penny sized hole in the middle of the litter box. Within a few days your cat should become comfortable with the hole and actually start aiming for it. Once you get your cat to aim for the hole in the litter box, you know you are well on your way.
As the days go by, gradually start enlarging the hole and eliminating more litter. Soon enough you will have a cat that uses the toilet with no litter, and now it's time to slowly eliminate the box completely. As you continue to enlarge the hole in your litter box, you should soon wind up with only the outside rim of the litter box with the entire toilet seat showing. slowly start to remove pieces of the rim of the litter box until it is completely gone.
If done correctly, your cat should be comfortable with the idea of using the toilet instead of a litter box. but even after your cat is fully trained to use the toilet, you will want to perform a strict cleaning schedule as it can get unsanitary quite quickly. if you plan on having company, make sure you take the time to clean the bathroom, as it is a turn off for guests to deal with cat hair.
