Alice In Wonderland Hookah
|
A hookah is form of water pipe originating in India about 300 years ago. Hookah smoking, or whooka has been extremely popular throughout the Middle East where it is often called shisha. These days hookah smoking happens to be popular in Europe, parts of North America, and South Africa. It remains particularly popular inside those Mid Eastern themed hookah bars or hookah lounges.
The hookah was actually invented by a physician to help people quit smoking, but there is real doubt that it is better for you than cigarettes. A hookah is made up of a water jar, usually of glass that is connected by a tubular main body to a bowl at the top. Special tobacco is placed in the bowl and covered with burning coals. Smoke is drawn through a hose leading from the water jar. The hot air is drawn down through the tobacco, and the smoke is filtered through the water before the smoker inhales it. This tends to cool the smoke.
Hookah tobacco differs from pipe tobacco. It is often sweetened with honey or a combination of molasses, fruit, and aromatic oils and other ingredients much like pipe tobacco is. There's something aesthetically pleasing about the way smoke moves around, and being able to manipulate it truly is a skill.
