For a simple earth battery setup running at about 6 volts using magnesium and copper cells, here is the data of daytime versus nighttime voltage based on temperature drop and I guess telluric currents.
Voltage per cell during daytime: 1.0 V
[*]Number of cells in series: 6
[*]Total daytime voltage: 6.0 V
[*]Voltage drop due to a 15°C temperature drop at night (0.01 V per degree per cell): approx. 0.9 V total
[*]Base night voltage after temperature drop: 5.1 V -still charges cell phone with USB hookup or runs LED
[*]Telluric currents increase night voltage by 5% -going by what the gurus say in the books
[*]Final estimated nighttime voltage with telluric effect: 5.35 V
So, the earth battery voltage drops from about 6.0 V during the day to around 5.35 V at night, factoring in both the cooling impact on electrode voltage and the boosting effect of natural telluric currents. This simple model helps understand voltage variations in a basic Mg-Cu earth battery setup due to environmental changes.
That is really much better than I thought and it is working well for months now. Seeing what happens in another few months or if I need to change out the magnesium rods.
Not too shabby for about $15 bucks.
