Have you attempted changing the output to DC then adjusting the position of the output coils to see if you can locate the position that aligns the output with the input phase demand?  I'm super curious to see if it can start pulling from it's own output.  

You do dedicated work!  Nice to see some real builds on here!

Thanks Jim - agree, we need more builders!

Those shakedown pulls don't have the pulse coils hooked up in any way, so they're dead weight (and are holding their own potential) until wired in. I am still to work out whether I feed the pulse coils to each other as the 'speed up' effect will apply equally to them, or if I attempt the full loop. I am trying to stay away from any electronics, but concede a diode or two might be needed to pass the gen output back to the pulse.
